Restaurant Review: Il Caminetto by Umbert (Whistler)

Il Caminetto by Umberto

Having come to Whistler since 2012, I finally got around to visiting Umberto's Il Caminetto in the main village, and it did not disappoint.

Ambience

The restaurant feels cozy and welcoming in a fine dining setting.

Service

Service was attentive without being intrusive.  On sitting down, we were offered iced water and a few minutes to take everything in.  Staff were friendly and helpful, they had good knowledge of the menu and were happy to cater to those with special dietary needs.

Food & Drink

Drink -

The by-the-glass wine list is not as extensive as I would like, and it focused mainly on BC and US wines despite being an Italian restaurant.  I ordered a California Cab Sauv which was okay but the meal would have been perfect with a glass of Montepulciano d'abruzzo.

Food -

I started with mushroom and truffle soup and my husband ordered lobster bisque.  We were both surprised by the simple yet delicious starters.  Temperature of my soup was perfect, texture was rich and creamy with a slight hint of truffle flavour.

Main course was duck confit and leg with root vegetable and hubby ordered lamb shoulder penne.  His pasta was cooked al dente complimented by the delicious ragu.  My duck confit was served in a generous Italian portion, simply presented.  Duck breast was tender and juicy and the skin crispy, I specially enjoyed the duck leg.

Cost

A two-course meal for two with a glass of wine each cost about CAD150 - reasonable for the quality of food and the venue.  Wine is a tad disappointing but if you go with a a big group of friends, it is best to order by the bottle.
